Isoparametric Hypersurfaces in Spheres
Tom Cecil

MacMillan 115

Abstract: This talk will be a survey of results on isoparametric (constant principal curvatures) hypersurfaces in spheres. Research on this topic began with a series of four papers by Elie Cartan in the 1930's, and many mathematicians have made contributions to this beautiful theory over the years. Isoparametric hypersurfaces form an important class of taut embeddings, and as such they have the Spherical Two-Piece Property, introduced by Tom Banchoff in a paper published in 1970. The talk will discuss recent progress made by the speaker, together with Quo-Shin Chi and Gary Jensen, towards the classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces with four distinct principal curvatures.
