CHAPTER 7

HUGH LASSEN

CHAPTER 7 - CONFIGURATION SPACES has proven to be by far the most complicated chapter mathematically. It appears that there is a plethera of ideas that are dealt with and introduced. I have to admit at once that as the chapter grew on my understanding diminished. Challenging!

However, before the chapter went completly over my head I thought about Julie Strandberg's "Dimensions." It appears that it must have been very hard to depict real movement in the dancers Flatland because the dancers have to go over each other. A possible way to solve this might be to perform the piece in a theater that has an overhanging balcony allowing the audience to look down on the Flatland performers. This might impair the dancers transformation from two dimensions to three. One could construct an auditorium theat started out raised up and then lowered down. This would be quite an expensive option. More practically, begin with the audience in the gallery and in the intermission have the audience move downstairs.

I was a little confused with the picture on page 144, describing the two dimensional paralelograms depicted in a three dimensional diagram. The colors. I know are meant to be helpful, perhaps I should go and read Kenny's comic strip again!
