Tight submanifolds in the last 50 years
by
Wolfgang Kühnel

MacMillan 115

Abstract: Roughly speaking, tight means "as convex as possible". The talk will give an outline of the development which started with the work of Chern, Lashof and Kuiper in the 1950s and was then substantially influenced by Tom Banchoff in the 60s and 70s. Besides classical differential geometry and critical point theory, since Banchoff's thesis a combinatorial aspect came in. In more recent years this led to the study of triangulated manifolds with the minimum number of vertices.
