Banchoff completed his graduate work at the University of California – Berkeley under the direction of Professor Shiing-shen Chern. Banchoff and Chern remain respected colleagues and continue to collaborate on projects of mutual interest. On this occasion in 1989, Tom and his mentor visited at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California.
