Awareness Month, April 2000, sponsored by the Joint Policy Board 
for Mathematics.

For the first time, the MAM2000 poster will appear both on bulletin 
boards and also on computer screens as a fully interactive document.

Students and teachers at all levels, as well as the general public, 
can see images of many people who use different dimensions in their 
work, and each of those images is a link to more information about 
the particular topic and related topics, including publications and 
teaching materials. Choreographers, computer animators, and cosmologists 
all use dimensions in different ways. Some scientists work with 
0-dimensional point clouds, others trace out 1-dimensional racing car 
tracks or study geological core samples. From "Flatland" to "A Wrinkle 
in Time," writers have probed lower and higher dimensions, and current 
physicists describe spaces of 10 and 26 dimensions. The MAM2000 poster 
makes it possible to explore all these ways of using dimensions, and 
gives all a fuller appreciation for the power of mathematics.

This year, Wolfram Research, Inc., joins the three mathematical 
societies in the JPBM, the American Mathematical Society, the 
Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial 
and Applied Mathematics, in sponsoring and organizing Mathematics 
Awareness Month.  The concept and design of the MAA2000 poster are 
due to Thomas Banchoff at Brown University and Davide Cervone at 
Union College.

As in past years, during Mathematics Awareness Month, celebrations 
will take place at colleges,universities, schools, and research 
laboratories across the country. Special events taking place this 
year include public lectures, mathematical games and competitions, 
and special days that bring high school students to college campuses 
where they are introduced to mathematics department and faculty.
