To embark on my term paper on Virginia Woolf in 10th grade, I decided to look her up in an encyclopedia in the school library. I chose the Encyclopaedia Britannica, since, after all, she was British. I selected the correct volume and flipped through the pages. W-A, W-I, W-O, W-O-O, W-O-O-D, W-O-O-L...hey! Where is she?

It took a while before it finally occurred to me to check the publication date of the book, which turned out to be around 1917, a few years before Woolf published her first book.
