Course announcement and sketch syllabus

Homework: Assignments will be posted to the course webpage each Monday, to be turned in the following Monday. However, the first assignment will be due January 22. You may discuss the homework assignments with other students, but you should write up your work independently. No late homework will be accepted.

Lecture notes

Midterm: There will be an in-class midterm examination Wednesday, February 13.

Projects: Interested students are encouraged to do independent projects. These would cover topics not directly addressed in my lectures, but close in spirit to the course. While students are encouraged to develop their own topics, lists of potential subjects will be distributed later in the semester. The final form of the project could be either a ten-page expository paper or a one-hour lecture.
Potential projects, in Postscript or PDF
