Book: Edwards and Penney, Multivariable calculus, 6th edition.

The plan is to cover Chapters 12-15 from the book. I.e. the approximate plan is as follows:

1)A thorough discussion of vectors in 3-dimensional space, equations of lines, planes, 3-dimensional curves and their curvature, some surfaces.

2) Partial derivatives, linear approximations, maxima and minima in the multivariable case, constrained optimization and Lagrange multipliers.

3) Multivariable integration: line and surface integrals, applications to geometry (such as area and volume computations etc.)

4) Multivariable versions of the fundamental theorem of calculus: Green's theorem, divergence theorem and Stokes theorem.


Midterms: There will be two midterms (tentatively) on October 7 and November 10 at 7pm.

The final grade: Your final grade will be computed as follows:

Midterms: 15% each

Homework: 20%

Final exam: 50%

Midterm 1 information: The exam will be in List 120. You are allowed to bring one sheet of paper with any formulas or text of your choice (but it has to bw written by you!).
