Geometry and Dynamics
in Surfaces and 3-Manifolds

May 3-6, Brown University

Organizing Committee:
Jeff Brock (Brown), Ken Bromberg (Utah)
Dick Canary (Michigan), and Yair Minsky (Yale)

The recent history of the interaction of surfaces and 3-manifolds in hyperbolic geometry has shown the power of W. Thurston's original plan to understand hyperbolic 3-manifolds in terms of the geometry of surfaces.

The combinatorial techniques emerging from the classification of infinite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds have given new tools for understanding dynamics on moduli space as well as motivating new approaches to relating the geometry and topology of closed hyperbolic manifolds. Likewise, the emergent combinatorial understanding of Teichmüller space has fostered new approaches to rigidity and dimension questions for the mapping class group and related objects.

The conference will feature a range of talks from researchers in geometry and dynamics in low dimensions and seek to strengthen connections between these various branches of current research, while exposing a broad contingent of early-career mathematicians to modern methods and techniques.

The scientific community is warmly invited to attend.

Schedule: The schedule is now available, as well as a list of submitted abstracts. In lieu of an abstract, Scott Wolpert has provided a Weil-Petersson quick-fact sheet which he plans to follow in his talk.

Registration: Please use the link to the left to register for the conference. This will help us a great deal with planning the event.
