Textbook: A Classical Introduction to Modern Number Theory
                by Kenneth Ireland and Michael Rosen, second edition

Note: You should not feel alarmed that the text book is sold as part of the Springer graduate text series. The first half of the book, which is the part we will mostly be using, was specifically written for this class at Brown (Michael Rosen is a professor here).

Course announcement and homework will be posted on this webpage. Homework assigned will be posted the Monday of the week before they are due. There will be a project assigned on February 13th, that will also be posted here.

  • Homework 1: due Tuesday January 29 at 4pm
    Reading assignment: Review notes from 1530, Chapter 1
    Problems: Review from Math1530, Chapter 1: problems 9, 10, 21

  • Homework 2: due Tuesday February 5 at 4pm
    Reading assignment: Chapter 2
    Problems: Chapter 1: problems 1,3,5, 17, 26 (need to add the additional assumption that n is at least 2), 28, 30, 34, 35, 38

  • Homework 3: due Tuesday February 12 at 4pm
    Reading assignment: Chapters 3 and 4
    Problems: Chapter 2: problems 2,9,10,17,22; Chapter 3: problems 5, 9, 10, 14, 18, 24
