Guidelines for Optional Make-up Homework
(back to class homepage)
The point of this assignment is to increase your homework grade by demonstrating significant improvement in your work. To be eligible for this credit, you must have low-scoring past homework scores and you must counter these by submitting perfect or very near perfect new solutions, according to the rules described below.
If you opt to complete this assignment, you must turn it in before the start of the final. Credit earned replaces up to two homework grades.
You may submit 2-4 problems. For each problem submitted, the following rules apply:
1) The problem must be graded out of 5 points in a previous homework, but you received 3/5 or less. Include the graded homework or a photocopy to demonstrate this.
2a) If NO SOLUTION to this problem appeared on the course website, and this problem did not re-appear on one of the midterm exams, then you may submit a correct solution to the same problem. Alternately, you can take option 2b below.
2b) If a solution did appear and/or the problem was used in a midterm exam, then you must submit a correct solution to eligible (see below) exam study problems. The exam study questions often include more than one question per problem; in that case be sure to answer all questions associated with that problem.
3) State the problem clearly and give a flawless and crystal clear solution. The problem will be graded as 5, 4, or 0 points: if flaws appear or your solution is hard to read for any reason, I will cease to spend time grading the problem. For this reason it is highly recommended you proofread and seek feedback on your proofs before turning in the assignment.
How credit is awarded: two successful problems will represent a 10-point assignment and replace your lowest homework score (out of the ten assignments remaining after two automatic drops). Similarly, two more successful problems can replace the second lowest homework score.
Final remark: this assignment is completely optional and not guaranteed to result in credit for you! If you intend to do this assignment, you should intend to do it well.
