MA 0100: Calculus

Instructors

Text book

Single Variable Calculus, 7th edition by Stewart. Due to the late start of this section, arrangements for obtaining the book will be discussed in class.

Differential equations with power series

See here for a section on solving differential equations using power series. Look at Section 16.5. The answers to the odd number questions are also online.

Review Integration

Please try to do the following worksheet to test your integration skills. You don't have to do this, but I will base a potential integration review session on the solutions I see handed in on Thursday March 15. Note: some questions require a combination of integration techniques.

Practice Sequences/Series

Here is a list of practice questions for the Patriot's Day Midterm. It is probably best if you completely study for the midterm first, and do this set of questions afterwards to completely test your understanding.

Contents

Integration techniques, sequences and series, and an introduction to differential equations.

Exams

There will be two midterms and one final exam. Dates and times will be announced on this webpage, see below.

First Midterm

Thursday March 22, 9:00 - 9:30am (in class). Topics: Sections 5.5, 7.1, 7.2 (only sin/cosine, no tan/sec), 7.4 (no case IV). Review session: Monday March 19, 7pm -- 9pm, BH 163.

Second Midterm

Monday April 16, 7:30pm - 8:30pm, BH 158. Topics: 11.1, 11.2, 11.3 (no estimates), 11.4 (no estimates), 11.5, 11.6. Review session: Thursday April 12th, 7pm -- 8:30pm, BH 158.

Final

The final exam is May 15th, 2pm, Kassar House 105. Topics: 5.5, 7.1, 7.2 (only sin/cosine, no tan/sec), 7.4 (no case IV), 11.1, 11.2, 11.3 (no estimates), 11.4 (no estimates), 11.5, 11.6, 11.7, 11.8, 11.9, 11.10 (no Theorem 8, 9 with their respective applications), 9.1, 9.3, 16.5 (first 6 coefficients only, no recursive formulas or recognizing functions). Practice final

Grade

Your grade is based on the homework, midterms and final. The first midterm counts for 20%, the second midterm counts for 30%, the homework counts for 10%, and the final counts for the remaining 40%.

Homework

Homework will be assigned every week, see below. Doing the homework is essential to succesfully completing this course. Although the homework only counts for 10% of your final grade, you should not expect to pass this course if you only do, say, half the assigned homework.

Calculators

Calculators are not required for this course, and they are not allowed on any exam. You make your own life easier if you do not use them for the homework exercises either.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin Math 0100.
