There are surprising links between certain questions in number theory (for example diophantine approximation or the Littlewood conjecture) and the study of dynamics on homogeneous spaces. In this talk I'll introduce some of the necessary dynamical ideas and then outline a case where they have been useful, probably concentrating on Margulis' solution of the Oppenheim conjecture.
