The Rose Whelan Society

A Mathematics and Applied Mathematics affinity group

The Rose Whelan Society is an organization for women and gender minorities who are
graduate students, postdoctorates, and faculty in pure and applied mathematics at Brown University.

About the Rose Whelan Society:

The Rose Whelan Society is a group aimed at creating community among women and gender minorities in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at Brown. The Society organizes social activities (group lunches, wine and cheese events at ICERM, ice skating trips), as well as career-oriented events (postdoc and job panels). We also organize outreach activities for undergraduate students (finals prep study sessions, graduate school panel). The Rose Whelan Society is funded by the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics departments at Brown and often collaborates on events with The Brown Chapter of AWM and The Brown SIAM Chapter.

The Rose Whelan Society was organized in October of 2001, principally through the efforts of Kathryn Leonard, a graduate student in the mathematics department, and Mirelle Boutin, a postdoctorate in the applied mathematics department. We chose to name ourselves after the first person to receive a Ph.D. from Brown's Department of Mathematics. Click here to read more about the life of Rose Whelan. Much support in getting this organization off the ground was received from the existing framework for affinity groups at Brown University. Our meetings are open to all, regardless of gender.
