Circle Waves

Suppose a plastic loop floats on the surface of a calm body of water. If the ring begins to vibrate, it will send off circular waves both outside and inside the loop. This image depicts such a situation. Here, the vibrating ring is the wide black circle toward the center of the image, while the colored circles represent the waves eminating from the ring. The interior waves shrink through smaller and smaller circles, which become a point at the center, and then emerge again as growing circles that have "turned inside out" (as indicated by the colors around the circles).

This image appeared in Beyond the Third Dimension, and is part of the video Fronts and Centers.
