Dimensions in Islamic Pattern

Scanned from Symmetries of Islamic Geometrical Patterns

allahallahDimensionality has played a major part in Islamic pattern since its conception. Although created in a 2-D space, the symmetric patterns which cover, weave, and tease across the surfaces of mosque walls invite deep contemplation into dimensions beyond the flat surface of the wall itself. The intricate geometry of the patterns reflect the intricate nature of life itself: seemingly straight-forward, yet upon closer reflection, strikingly intricate, thought-out, and beautifully planned. The longer one gazes upon the pattern, the more one sees into its true nature, its underlying structure, and its potential for dimension which goes far beyond 2-space. The pattern expresses the true reality of the surface better than the flat surface itself. As one reflects upon it, the many layers of reality become manifest. The symmetry, unity, and consistency of the pattern all reflect a symmetry, unity, and consistency that exists at the deepest level of all things: at the level of the divine. God, the greatest geometer of all, created everything, including human life, like the pattern which adorns the flat wall of the mosque: with depth, fore-thought, and a true nature and level of dimension which goes beyond what is immediately perceived.

allahallahThe same geometric mosaic patterns which inspire contemplation into deeper realities are also used in 3 dimensional structures, such as domed archways called muquarnas.Geometric patterns are projected from the flat surface into 3-D to create the stalactite formations and their multi-faceted faces. This allows the viewer to enter under the pattern to be surrounded by its beauty and even deeper complexity. But what about four dimensions?
