Abbott's Letter of Resignation from the City of London School

13 March 1889

To the Right Honble Lord Mayor,

My Lord Mayor,

I shall be obliged by your submitting to the Court of Common Council my resignation of the Headmastership of the City of London School to take effect next Michaelmas.

The responsibilities of the office must, under any circumstances, heavily tax the energy as well as the intellectual qualifications of the Headmaster for the times being; and the burden has been increased by the important changes in the course of study introduced by the Court last year, changes which--though beneficial in themselves, if well supervised controlled and directed--require increased rather than failing powers in the Headmaster, to supervise, and possibly to modify or develop them.
