Symmetry in Nature, Science, and Art

"Symmetry establishes a ridiculous and wonderful cousinship between objects, phenomena and theories outwardly unrelated: terrestrial magnetism, woman's veils, polarized light, natural selection, the theory of groups, structure of space, vase designs, quantum physics, scarabs, flower petals, X-ray interference patterns, cell division in sea urchins, equilibrium positions of crystals, Romanesque cathedrals, snowflakes, music, the theory of relativity..."

allahallahSymmetry is present throughout nature . Leaves, flowers, and trees are all common examples. More subtle to the eye, yet just as striking are the symmetries of water ripples on a pond, of snowflakes, and of galaxies themselves. Beautiful symmetry also exists in the molecular structure of DNA, atoms, and other molecules. The presence of beautiful symmetries in molecules such as the Ferric Wheel have inspired modern Islamic artists who recognize the similarity between art and science.

allahallah It is common knowledge that babies will stare longer at symmetric faces than at faces with asymmetric elements. Adults, too, are attracted to symmetric faces and bodies. Swallows are attracted to mates with symmetric tails, and zebras are attracted to mates with symmetric stripe patterns. Symmetry is indicative of inner genetic fitness, and thus is interpreted as beautiful and desirable by human beings.

allahallah All cultures of the world have erected symmetric structures, created symmetric patterns, and recognized and imitated the presence of symmetry in nature. The eye rests within symmetry; symmetric patterns mean order and stability. This order, predictability, and repetition of elements has in all cultures been seen as beautiful. Because of symmetry's presence in nature, science, math, art, and ideas about divinity and perfection, symmetry is an excellent way to approach Islamic Art, a cultural expression that unites all of these themes in its beautiful symmetric pattern.

allahallah Let's continue our tour to learn more about the different types of symmetry.
